In 2019, 3M's U.S.-booked air spend was $40 million, down
from $64 million in 2018. The drop was a consequence of 3M's cost-saving
initiatives in 2019. 3M expects U.S.-booked air spend to fall to $35 million in
2020. The multinational conglomerate has a single global travel policy and a
single U.S. travel policy. About 72 percent of U.S.-booked air was domestic.
Air bookings made outside of the US were made through either BCD Travel or CWT.
In 2019, 85 percent of U.S.-booked tickets were made through online booking tools,
and 62 percent of 3M's U.S.-tickets booked online required no agent assistance.
In 2019, 3M focused on optimizing its travel program by
consolidating global travel data and refining travel behavior communications.
The company established a global governance model, under which countries and
departments aligned resources to support 3M's optimization. The company
implemented global approval processes in its online booking tool and executed a
global VAT reclaim strategy. The company aligned market share to preferred
suppliers and deployed an automated card application process for all corporate
card programs in the U.S. and Canada. The company also enhanced air spend
tracking of individual travel cards, added a non-employee travel process and
made Concur and its price tracking and rebooking technologies available to more
travelers.
For 2020, 3M has
focused on global processes, system implementations and optimization.
Specifically, it has reviewed reimbursement and card payment process,
in-channel booking enforcement and policy refinement. 3M established individual
meals guidelines in the U.S. and Canada and a non-employee travel standard and
reimbursement guideline. In addition, the company implemented some policy
adjustments due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It has also reviewed duty of care
practices and reporting.
