Industrial giant 3M had $18.4 million in 2022 U.S.-booked air volume, more than double BTN's 2021 estimate of $7.7 million. The company does not plan to fully return to the office and does not anticipate its business travel will return to pre-pandemic
levels. 3M reported 2022 net sales of $34.2 billion, a 3.2 percent decrease year over year.
The company in 2022 focused on automation, consolidation, elimination and simplification, streamlining processes, and reducing redundancies and complexity wherever possible. The travel department expanded its card request tool to Asia-Pacific and Europe,
the Middle East and Africa. It also further integrated an acquisition’s healthcare provider travel process, made self-serve reporting available to more teams, expanded non-employee travel in EMEA, and added hotel options by enabling non-global distribution
system content through the current travel agencies.
During the year, 3M also migrated to a new internal policy tool, led a back-to-basics campaign for better understanding and compliance of policies, established global service centers to enhance its support framework, updated travel policies to reflect
the company’s flexible workplace program, and moved from a two-up approval model for international travel to a one-up model.
For 2023, the company will primarily focus on selecting and implementing a global travel agency, making travel and expense policies readily available to travelers on their phones as part of the migration to a new travel agency, and globalizing compliance
training by offering local languages. It also is preparing for the 2024 spinoff of the 3M Health Care business.
3M reported about 11.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in 2022, both “upstream and downstream.” Business travel accounted for 31,500 metric tons of CO2e, up from 20,500 reported in 2021.
As of Dec. 31, 2022, 3M employed about 92,000 individuals, with approximately 37,000 of them located in the United States. The numbers are slightly down from 2021, when it reported a workforce of 95,000 people, with about 38,000 in the U.S.
