Explosive growth continued in 2019 for online retail and tech giant Amazon, so much so that BTN estimates that the company last year spent more on U.S.-booked air travel than nearly every other company.
Amazon's 2019 revenue increased more than 20 percent to $280.5 billion. The company in 2019 generated 15.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from its corporate purchases and Amazon-branded product emissions, a category that includes business travel among other functions. The company generated 11.95 million metric tons of such emissions in 2018.
Amazon's travel policy forbids the use of business class for air travel, even for intercontinental flights.
The company at the end of 2019 employed about 798,000 full- and part-time employees, up from 647,500 one year prior. As of June 2020, Amazon employs more than 1 million workers.
