More CitiGroup employees transitioned
to a hybrid work model in 2022 and, despite a continued push to virtual
platforms in place of travel for internal meetings, the banking and financial
giant saw U.S.-booked air volume surge to $58.5 million, up from $7.5 in 2021,
according to BTN estimates.
Carbon emissions related to air travel
in 2022 increased more than 500 percent year over year but were still a
fraction of 2019 emissions. Meanwhile, emissions related to train travel
increased by more than 200 percent year over year and are nearing 2019 levels,
signaling a possible policy shift to preference rail over air on viable routes.
Emissions data related to air travel is also now visible in Citi’s booking
tool.
The firm expanded its private and
commercial banking services in Europe and Greater China in 2022 and, following
the removal of travel restrictions in the latter region 2023, CEO Jane Fraser
signaled further expansion across China, according to a Bloomberg report.
Citi had close to 240,000 employees
worldwide at the end of 2022, up about 19,000 year over year.
