Google’s U.S.-booked air volume soared
in 2022 to $151 million from $10 million in 2021. This occurred while the
company took steps to be more intentional with its T&E spending by
providing clarity on critical travel versus non-critical travel and by asking
employees to reduce non-critical trips.
In 2022, the company introduced its
“Ally” service desk for travelers requiring special assistance. In 2023, Google
is strongly supporting the use of its preferred booking channels and trying to
shift away from “open booking.” In 2022, only about 55 percent of globally
booked air volumes went through the company’s travel management company
American Express Global Business Travel, with the balance booked outside of
that channel.
The company’s 2022 greenhouse gas emissions
were approximately 10.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which
includes Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. The latter includes business
travel, which Google reported was 211,000 metric tons of CO2e, representing
about 2 percent of the company’s total.
Google reported 2022 revenue of $182.5
billion, down from the $257.6 billion reported in 2021. The company also grew
to more than 190,000 employees as of Dec. 31, 2022, from the 174,000 reported
the prior year. In January 2023, however, it announced a reduction in its
workforce of approximately 12,000 roles.
