Chipmaker Intel's 2022 U.S.-booked air volume spend
increased nearly four-fold from last year's $4.5 million, according to BTN
estimates, despite the company reporting a 20 percent year-over-year decline in
revenue to $63.1 billion. The lower operating results were due to an uncertain
macroeconomic environment arising from inflation, the war in Ukraine and
Covid-19 shutdowns in the company's supply chain in China, according to Intel's
latest annual report. In addition, the company operating expenses increased 13 percent
to $24.5 million.
The company's restructuring program was approved in the
third quarter of 2022 and was expected to be completed by the end of 2023. It
included staff reductions, reorganized business units and additional
cost-cutting measures. Intel in May 2023 also grounded its employee air shuttle
program between campuses in Oregon, California and Arizona, according to a
report by The Oregonian.
Intel has had a "hybrid-first" work policy since
2021, but in May 2023, told employees it wanted more of a balance between
remote and in-office work, without changing its policy. In 2022 the company
announced its commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across
its global operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 2040, and to increase its energy
efficiency and lower the carbon footprint of its products and platforms.
