Travel cost-containment efforts continued at professional services firm Marsh McLennan in 2022, as well as compliance, traveler engagement and sustainability initiatives. Travel volumes rebounded strongly, U.S.-booked air spend jumping from $6 million
in 2021 to $36 million, with a further increase to $50 million anticipated for 2023.
The firm identified travel as one of its most impactful areas of carbon emissions in its 2022 ESG report. Inevitably, emissions from air travel rose sharply in 2022, up from 7,000 metric tonnes CO2e in 2021 to 51,000 tonnes. However, that remains substantially
below Marsh McLennan’s 2019 baseline of 80,000 tonnes.
Measures the firm is taking to reduce emissions include expanded awareness of its Green Traveler program, which provides sustainable travel booking options and education for travelers. Marsh McLennan has also added sustainability information to its online
booking tools.
Marsh McLennan plans to introduce hotel and air re-shopping tools during 2023.
