U.S.-booked air travel spend of $143 million in 2022 (compared to $41 million
in 2021), McKinsey has taken an aggressive stance on reducing carbon emissions.
As of Jan. 1, 2023, the
consulting firm implemented a global internal carbon fee on all air travel to
support the transition to net zero by 2030. The company has committed to
reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions from business travel 30 percent per employee by
2025 from a 2019 baseline. The roadmap includes virtual events, hybrid work
arrangements and sustainable aviation fuel.
Since indirect emissions
from travel account for more than 90 percent of its carbon footprint, the
company continues to engage with travel suppliers on sustainability goals and
in 2022 launched its first supplier summit. The Green Hotels program engages
more than 1,000 hotel properties on sustainability and urges employees to
select environmentally sustainable properties.
The company in 2022 held
more than 115,000 virtual interviews and recruiting events while teams
implement hybrid and remote working models. A new event planning tool optimizes
travel for meetings using location and transportation options.
