BTN estimates pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. in 2021 spent about $7.5 million on U.S.-booked air travel, down from an estimated $14 million in 2020.
The company’s sales increased 17 percent year over year to about $48.7 billion. Merck in 2021 spun off reproductive pharmaceutical business Organon & Co. into a standalone company with 9,000 employees. Merck at the end of 2021 had about 68,000 employees worldwide, down from 74,000 one year prior. About 27,000 are employed in the United States.
Merck in 2021 acquired pharmaceutical company Acceleron for $11.5 billion.
The company’s business travel in 2021 generated about 241,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, up from 208,600 the year prior. The company’s online booking tool now offers a rail-travel option to help limit the environmental impact of business travel.
