International Airlines Group carriers British Airways and Iberia will increase their global distribution system surcharge on Sept. 18, the airlines disclosed in an agency alert. When their surcharge took hold last November, the airlines levied on GDS bookings 8 British pounds or $10 per "fare component," generally defined as a one-way ticket or half a round-trip. The fee adjustment amounts to 9 British pounds or $12 per fare component. BA and Iberia continue to waive the fee for "low-cost channels," including bookings on its own websites and those processed in channels that tap into their application programming interfaces that conform to the International Air Transport Association's New Distribution Capability standard. Beyond that, several travel management companies have a private channel arrangement to waive the GDS fee. "We periodically review our distribution costs to ensure that the amount of the Distribution Technology Charge reflects the current additional costs incurred for bookings that are not made using an NDC-based connection or through other low-cost channels," the airlines stated.
