Alaska Airlines has expanded the pilot of its sustainable aviation fuel credits program, announced in November, with Mileage Plan loyalty program customers able to earn elite-qualifying miles with their purchases, the carrier announced Tuesday.
Guests can choose to offset 5 percent, 10 percent or 20 percent of their carbon impact for their flights when booking on the carrier's website. Mileage Plan members who buy SAF credits will earn 500 elite-qualifying miles for every $100 they spend on SAF, up to 5,000 EQMs per year, according to Alaska. Previously, the EQM credit was a temporary promotion that ran only until Dec. 31, 2024.
The carrier is continuing its partnership with the climate technology company Chooose, and the SAF credit options will appear on the same page as other optional trip add-ons during the booking process. Alaska claimed it is the first U.S. airline "to create a link between guest engagement in SAF and earning elite status."
